History of Farming the Akoya Pearl

Most traditional necklaces of single-strand are strung with cultured pearls known as Akoya. These pearls were the very first pearls to be refined in the beginning of the 20th century. Jewelry made from these pearls are affordable to almost anyone.

Farming process for Akoya

The process for farming Akoya pearls whether freshwater or oyster mussel is slightly different. This procedure begins with the gathering of special oysters known as “Pinctada Fucata Matensii”. This oyster is officially known in the pearl industry as the “Akoya Oyster”. But they are also a by-product of the “Pinctada Fucata Chemnitzii” oyster.Both Chinese and Japanese pearl farmers normally breed their own Akoya oyster stock on their farms from year to year.

Farmers are still using the practice of harvesting a limited number of oysters that are wild from oceans every year in order to fertilize their stock that already exist. There are many benefits for doing this including:

These akoya pearls are usually produced on small independent family farms. Individuals who do not understand the intricacy and passion of the pearl producing cycle, might think that these pearl farmers are very wealthy and living the good life but in the majority of family farms this is simply not true.

These family farms produce the Akoya pearls not for money but for the art in its creation.

About 95% of this jewelry is produced and manufactured in China alone. In fact, during the 1950s the government of China had hugely invested in the area of pearls cultivation. After nearly about 30 years time span, a complete cultivation industry had been developed in China and with time, this keeps on getting better and updated. They are quite pricy and expensive.
